Space Requirements / Occupancy Guidelines (City of Chicago)
In order to meet legal requirements a unit must have at a minimum the following amount of square feet per person.
- one person - 125 sq. feet
- two people - 250 sq. feet
- three people - 350 sq. feet
- four people - 450 sq. feet
- five people - 525 sq. feet
- six people - 600 sq. feet
- seven people - 675 sq. feet
- eight people - 750 sq. feet
- nine people - 825 sq. feet
- ten people - 900 sq. feet
When calculating square footage, don't count kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, closets, or areas where an adult cannot fully stand up.
If a landlord refuses to rent to you because they claim that your family is too large for the unit, this may constitute illegal housing discrimination. For further information on this and other types of discrimination, please see the Housing Discrimination guide.
