Avoiding Danger: Children and Open Windows

When the weather gets hot, many of us open our windows in hopes of cooling down. Unfortunately, every year many children fall out of open windows, severly injuring themselves and sometimes dying. According to the Illinois Attorney General, there are a few simple tips to reduce the risk of a child falling out of an open window.

Each year, children are injured by falling from open windows.
• Do not open windows by more than four inches
• Use child-safety window guards or security screens (regular screens will not keep a child from falling
out of a window)
• Keep furniture away from windows
• If possible, open your windows from the top
