New U.S. Census Data Released for Medium Size Illinois Communities

From our friends at the Metro Chicago Information Center (MCIC):

The communities listed above have at least two things in common. One, they're all in Illinois and two, they all have new demographic, social, economic and housing data available for the first time since the 2000 decennial census!

The American Community Survey (ACS), conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, is a nationwide survey of U.S. households that provides vital data and information on a "rolling" basis, rather than every ten years. The ACS is comprised of nearly 2 million interviews every year, giving reliable estimates for geographic areas with populations over 65,000 people.

Today, the Census Bureau released ACS data estimates for 2005 - 2007 combined; the most current data since the 2000 decennial census for medium-sized areas with a population of at least 20,000 people.

Those of you who know MCIC know we love data. In fact, we're data geeks. MCIC looked at new ACS data for more than 100 communities in Illinois, with populations between 20,000 and 65,000. Here, we highlight data from twelve south suburban communities, sometimes referred to collectively as the "Chicago Southland." These communities include Calumet City, Chicago Heights, Dolton, Harvey, Homer Glen, Lansing, New Lenox, Oak Forest, Orland Park, Park Forest, South Holland and Tinley Park.
