About Public Transit Data
The details of your commute play a huge role in what neighborhood you choose to live in, and to this end MoveSmart.org asks for your work address and mode of commute when you create a profile. Currently, we use this information to provide a summary of what your commute would look like from the center of any given zip code to your work (or other commonly visited) address.
Unfortunately, we are unable to give you a summary of your commute by public transit. Metra and PACE do not share their routing data, and the Northeastern Regional Transportation Authority (the parent agency to these agencies and the CTA) does not provide any way for us to provide directions that involve switching from one agency to another (i.e. taking a Metra train to a CTA bus). You can search for these routes on websites like Google.com/maps and Goroo.com, but we're unable to sort neighborhoods by their relative commute time.
MoveSmart.org supports the great work of CityGoRound, a project from the same folks who brought you WalkScore, that is encouraging transit agencies to share their data in a common format. Please let the RTA know that you want to be able to search for neighborhoods by commute time.
